A busy August for cruise at the Port of Tórshavn

August was a busy month at the Port of Tórshavn

We welcomed 17 cruise ships, bringing approximately 12,000 guests to the Faroe Islands in total. With these 17 calls, August accounted for more than a third of the 50 cruise ship calls scheduled at the Port of Tórshavn this year.

The month also demonstrated the diversity of cruise activity at the Port of Tórshavn, ranging from Hebridean Sky, carrying 99 guests, to Norwegian Star, carrying 2,267 guests.

Three ships made their inaugural calls in Tórshavn, and on two occasions we held plaque exchanges on board. This long-standing tradition is a great opportunity for us as a port authority to meet the captain and share a little about Tórshavn and the Faroe Islands.

An increasing proportion of the cruise ships visiting Tórshavn are luxury vessels

These ships are characterised, among other things, by a high level of service, fewer guests and a high crew-to-guest ratio. Guests travelling on these ships often seek different and more exclusive experiences, and tend to enjoy exploring local shops and cafés in the town.

In August, we welcomed six luxury cruise ships. This is a segment of the cruise industry with which we are keen to strengthen our relationships in the years ahead.

Focus on partnerships and experiences

An important part of the Port of Tórshavn’s work is strengthening our relationships with cruise lines and gaining a better understanding of what they and their guests are looking to experience.

When Viking Mira visited Tórshavn on August 25th, a representative from the Port of Tórshavn joined the ship’s Shore Excursions Manager on a FAM tour. The purpose of the day was to give him an opportunity to experience some of the excursions and experiences offered by local Faroese providers firsthand.

The day was a great success, and we hope to arrange more familiarisation visits in the years ahead.

The Final Cruise Calls of the Year

Although summer is drawing to a close, we still have several cruise calls to look forward to this year.

Six cruise ships are scheduled to visit Tórshavn in September. On Sunday, September 6th, Viking Mira will make her third call of the year, while Spitsbergen will bring the 2026 cruise season to a close on September 29th.
